The Midday Tape

The index tape is risk-off even as the AI capex headlines keep piling up, and that gap between the narrative and the price action is the story of the session.

Rates and the macro backdrop stay benign, but bonds are bid anyway.

Initial jobless claims printed 194,000, a level that keeps the labor market firmly in "fine, not weak" territory, while the Leading Index came in flat at 0.0%. The Fed's balance sheet sits at $6.756 trillion. None of that is the kind of data that should send money into long duration, yet Treasurys (TLT) are up 1.5% on the day. That bond bid, paired with a 2.1% drop in gold (GLD), points to a tape that is de-risking out of crowded trades rather than chasing a clean flight-to-safety trade. The dollar (UUP) is flat.

Megacap AI spending headlines are colliding with a Nasdaq that's selling off anyway.

Meta (META) announced a 2-for-1 stock split alongside an $825 billion AI infrastructure commitment, one of the bigger capex headlines of the year. Microsoft (MSFT) is stacking up partnerships on the same theme, tie-ups with Boehringer Ingelheim, Merck, NVIDIA and Dawn Health, and a Copilot/Agent 365 governance push through ModelOp. Rockwell Automation is layering NVIDIA's Nemotron models into its industrial platform. None of it is holding the tape up: the Nasdaq-100 proxy (QQQ) is down 2.2% and the S&P proxy (SPY) is off 1.1%, with Microsoft itself down 1.3%. Small caps (IWM) are basically flat, which tells you this is a megacap/AI-specific unwind, not a broad liquidation. Semis are in the mix too, with analysts still adjusting targets on Lam Research after its print, keeping that group choppy.

Defensives and single names are where the real dispersion is.

Southern Company (SO) is up 2.7% after HSBC initiated coverage with a Buy, a classic rotation-into-utilities signal on a day growth is getting sold. AstraZeneca (AZN) is up 2.7% on news its lung cancer drug ZEGFROVY is now available in the US. Wix (WIX) is the standout mover, up 6.3%, helped by its new PatientGPT partnership with K Health. Elsewhere, Elevance Health is drawing a wave of price-target adjustments from Truist and others as the stock digests its recent print. In energy, Cheniere locked in long-term LNG supply deals with QatarEnergy, and Shell and Exxon's Infineum joint venture is reportedly exploring an $8 billion sale, both quiet positives for the group as crude (USO) adds 0.9%.

Still ahead this afternoon:

Western Digital reports after the close tonight, one of the bigger tech prints on the calendar, alongside Blackstone's morning report still working through the market and a long bench of regional bank and industrial earnings. Watch whether the Nasdaq's reversal deepens into the close or whether the AI capex headlines eventually pull bid-side flow back into the mega-caps.

Bottom line: traders are selling the AI winners on the same day the AI spending story gets bigger, a classic sign the market wants proof of return, not just promises of capex.
