Traders open the last session of October staring at a market that can't decide whether AI-driven demand or tariff-driven costs are the bigger story, and they're doing it under the heaviest earnings deluge of the week.

Caterpillar's tariff tax on the AI boom sets the tone.

Caterpillar (CAT) orders are surging on AI-linked power demand, data centers need the generators and heavy equipment the company builds, but tariffs are eating the upside, and the stock is down 9.4% even as Oppenheimer holds its Outperform rating and a $1,009 price target. That gap between booming fundamental demand and policy-driven margin pressure is the cleanest read-through of where this market's anxiety sits. The broader tape backs it up: QQQ is underperforming SPY, IWM is holding up better than both large-cap benchmarks, and TLT is firmer, a pattern consistent with money rotating out of mega-cap industrial and tech exposure and into safer or smaller corners of the market. Gold (GLD) is softer too, down 1.3%, suggesting some de-risking rather than a flight to classic havens.

An earnings avalanche closes out the month.

Before the bell, D.R. Horton (DHI) raised its quarterly dividend alongside results, Tenet Healthcare (THC) raised full-year guidance, Crocs (CROX) raised its outlook, and EMCOR (EME) and DT Midstream (DTM) both lifted guidance on record or strong quarters. Entegris (ENTG) issued fresh Q4 guidance, Harley-Davidson (HOG) and Oshkosh (OSK) both updated full-year numbers, and Saia (SAIA) jumped 5.9% after posting results and unveiling a new $250 million buyback. It's a last-trading-day-of-month pileup, and the oil majors still have to weigh in: Chevron (CVX) and ExxonMobil (XOM) report before the open, alongside AstraZeneca (AZN), Sanofi (SNY), BP (BP), Colgate-Palmolive (CL) and Regeneron (REGN).

Mega-cap and AI threads.

Apple (AAPL) is reportedly lifting production targets for the iPhone Duo on stronger-than-expected demand, a bullish supply-chain signal heading into the holiday quarter. SentinelOne (S) is integrating Anthropic's Claude into its security platform, another sign AI tooling is becoming table stakes across software. On the deal side, ADT (ADT) is being acquired by Thrive Holdings in an all-cash transaction, with Evercore and Jefferies advising, and Jefferies (JEF) shares are up 3.5% on the back of that advisory flow.

Notable movers.

MGM Resorts (MGM) is up 5.8% even as both Barclays and JPMorgan trimmed price targets, a sign the earnings beat is outweighing forward caution. Biogen (BIIB) is up 2.3% after RBC raised its target to $272. Boston Scientific drew analyst downgrades following its print, and Keysight (KEYS) is softer ahead of its own November 19 report date.

On the radar today:

month-end flows into the close, a full slate of energy and pharma earnings still landing before the bell, and the FTC pressing Lyft (LYFT) for pricing and compensation data, a reminder gig-economy regulatory risk hasn't gone away.

Bottom line: demand is real, tariffs are the drag, and today's earnings flood will decide whether the market closes October leaning into growth or ducking for cover.
