The Closing Bell
Stocks ground higher into the close as resilient labor data cooled aggressive rate-cut bets, even as Wall Street braces for the heaviest earnings night of the quarter once the bell rings.
The data held up, and so did yields.
JOLTS job openings printed at 7.523 million and factory orders jumped 1.8%, both firmer than a market looking for the Fed to ease up. Treasurys sold off on the prints, with the long bond (TLT) down 0.7% as yields pushed higher, while the dollar (UUP) barely budged. Equities shrugged it off. The S&P 500 (SPY) added 0.2%, the Nasdaq (QQQ) led with a 0.5% gain on mega-cap strength, and small caps (IWM) outperformed at 0.4% even as high-yield credit (HYG) sat flat. Gold (GLD) slipped 0.6% and oil (USO) firmed 0.9%, a mix that reads as a market pricing resilience, not stress.
The real event is still ahead.
Tonight brings one of the biggest earnings drops of the year, with Advanced Micro Devices and Arista Networks headlining a slate that also includes Amgen, AIG, Booking Holdings, Shopify, Pfizer and Toast. The AI infrastructure story stayed in focus even without results: Alphabet (GOOG) struck a $1.5 billion prepaid energy deal to help power its data center buildout and was reported to be restricting search access for schools that limit AI use, though the stock eased 0.3% on the day.
Movers told the single-stock story.
Match Group (MTCH) tumbled 8.3%, the day's worst showing in this tape, as Deutsche Bank, Barclays and BofA all took fresh cuts to their price targets. Flutter Entertainment (FLUT) dropped 4.7% as its FanDuel unit named Christian Genetski permanent CEO. Vertex Pharmaceuticals (VRTX) fell 3.7% even as Scotiabank and RBC both raised targets. Olin (OLN) slid 3.3% despite Wells Fargo lifting its price target, with Huntsman reiterating plans to close their merger in early 2027. SharkNinja (SN) gave back 2.7% on a quieter news day of product launches. Elsewhere, Deckers Outdoor raised its fiscal 2027 EPS guidance, Goldman Sachs upgraded SiriusXM to Buy, and Michael Burry disclosed a bigger stake in Sprouts Farmers Market. In M&A, Organigram Global agreed to acquire Aurora Cannabis, ending Curaleaf's hostile bid, and Roku drew attention on reports the DOJ is nearing approval of Fox's acquisition. Lululemon was hit with a new securities class action.
After the bell and tomorrow.
AMD and Arista Networks results land after the close tonight and will set the tone for AI-adjacent trading into Wednesday, with Amgen, AIG, Booking Holdings, Shopify, Pfizer, Toast, DuPont, Clorox and Eaton all reporting in the same window. Expect the AI capex and labor-market narratives to keep fighting for control of the tape.
Bottom line: the market held its footing on strong jobs and factory data, but the real verdict comes after hours, with AMD and Arista set to decide whether the AI trade still has room to run.
