The Midday Tape

Oil is doing the talking today, and equities are listening for all the wrong reasons.

Energy leads, everything else lags.

Eight of eleven S&P sectors are red at midday, with energy the lone bright spot as crude rips higher, the United States Oil Fund (USO) up 4.3% on the session. The move traces straight to the Middle East: Houthi forces claim strikes on Saudi Arabia's King Khalid airport, Najran airport, and Khamis Mushait airbase, while Iran is reiterating it won't abandon uranium enrichment rights. That's injecting a fresh geopolitical risk premium into crude and pressuring risk assets broadly. Underneath it, jobless claims printed 197,000, a tight read that keeps the Fed's higher-for-longer calculus in play, and bond yields are elevated enough that one headline flags 5.7% as the number squeezing leveraged corners of the market. The S&P proxy SPY is off 0.4%, the Nasdaq-tracking QQQ down 0.6%, and small caps via IWM down 0.9%, broad-based de-risking rather than a single-sector story.

Mega-cap tech is soft, and the yield-plus-crypto combo is hitting neoclouds hard.

NVIDIA (NVDA) is down 0.9% and Alphabet (GOOGL) off 0.4%, with Microsoft (MSFT) roughly flat, no panic but no leadership either. The more acute pain is in bitcoin-adjacent data center names: Applied Digital (APLD), CIFR, CLSK, HUT, IREN, NBIS, RIOT and WULF are all getting squeezed as a bitcoin slide collides with high bond yields, a double hit for balance sheets built on crypto collateral and cheap financing assumptions. Applied Digital is also digesting its own Q1 results today, with analysts revising forecasts post-print; the stock is down 1.6%. On the AI-capex side, Anthropic is committing $150 million over three years to the Genesis Mission alongside Amazon (AMZN), Google and Microsoft, a reminder that the spending arms race hasn't slowed even as sentiment has.

Single names are moving on idiosyncratic news.

Chipotle (CMG) is having its best day in months on chatter of Starbucks takeover interest. Unity Software is gaining on the back of Roblox's build-tool adoption numbers circulating through the gaming-engine trade. Neogen is higher, Intel is lower with chip-sector peers soft following the sector's AM weakness. AST SpaceMobile is sliding alongside SpaceX, down 2.5%, as satellite-comms names give back recent gains. And microcap NFT Limited (MI) is a mess, halted, resumed, halted again on a downside circuit breaker, now off roughly 40% after pricing a $1 million direct offering.

Still ahead this afternoon:

watch crude and Treasury yields for follow-through as the Mideast headlines develop, keep an eye on neocloud names for any stabilization in bitcoin, and position ahead of tomorrow's Delta earnings as the market gauges whether the airline sector's resilience since the Iran conflict can hold.

Bottom line: this is a risk-off tape built on oil and yields, with mega-cap tech merely along for the ride and leveraged crypto-adjacent names taking the real hit.
