The Midday Tape

Strong manufacturing data and a blowout Accenture quarter are fighting a broad-based risk-off tape, and breadth is losing.

Macro backdrop is firmer than the price action suggests.

ISM Manufacturing PMI came in at 54.5 with new orders at 55.3, both solidly in expansion, while initial jobless claims printed a tight 197,000. Challenger job cuts of 43,281 round out a dataset that argues for a resilient labor market and factory sector. Yet the S&P 500 (SPY) and Nasdaq (QQQ) are both fractionally red, the dollar (UUP) is bid, and Treasuries (TLT) are soft. Eight of eleven sectors are lower on the session even as cyclicals outperform, a split that points to rotation out of defensives rather than a clean risk-on move.

Mega-cap tech is mixed and the memory trade is selling the news.

Micron (MU) beat with what headlines call a record quarter, and Morgan Stanley reiterated its Overweight with a $1,200 target, flagging tighter memory supply running through 2028. The stock is lower by 1.6% regardless, dragging the Dow down more than 200 points intraday. Oracle (ORCL) is sliding again, off nearly 1%, with no clear single catalyst beyond continued pressure on its valuation story. Microsoft (MSFT) is in headlines for a leadership change, LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky departing, rather than price action, with the stock little moved. IBM (IBM) is a standout gainer, up over 2%, riding the halo from Accenture's print.

Accenture's beat is the session's biggest single catalyst.

Accenture (ACN) is up more than 18% after results, and the read-through is lifting the entire IT services and software complex: Cognizant, Wipro, Infosys, ServiceNow and Salesforce are all cited as movers higher on the back of it. It is the clearest evidence today that a strong print can still move an entire group, even with the index tape heavy.

Biotech and industrials see idiosyncratic hits.

Regeneron (REGN) is down nearly 4% despite a deepened 20-year, up-to-$8-billion partnership extension with Sanofi, as its Phase 2 COURAGE data showed a lower dose failed to enhance weight loss alongside semaglutide. Cal-Maine is sharply lower after a wider-than-expected loss tied to muted egg prices. On the smaller-cap side, Reddit is higher on chatter that revenue is running well above Street numbers, Nexalin is up roughly 50% on a new Latin America distribution deal, and Grindr is lower after announcing it will acquire PurposeMed.

Banks are quietly cautious.

A wave of price-target trims from JPMorgan and Evercore across regionals, Zions, Western Alliance, Valley National, Regions, Texas Capital among them, mostly maintaining ratings but cutting targets, suggests desks are bracing ahead of bank earnings rather than calling for trouble.

Still ahead this afternoon:

Nike reports after the close, the first major read on consumer discretionary demand this earnings cycle, and oil (USO) remains a watch after Chinese refiners said they are suspending October fuel exports.

Bottom line: the data is good, the earnings reactions are loud, but the index tape is grinding lower on broad rotation, and Nike's print tonight is the next real catalyst.
