The Midday Tape

Mega-cap tech is doing the damage today, dragging the broader tape lower while money quietly rotates into bonds and gold for safety.

AI infrastructure doubts hit the mega-caps.

A Bloomberg exclusive reporting that Microsoft (MSFT) is tightening oversight of data center projects tied to neocloud partners Nebius and Iren, citing delays and rising costs, is rattling the AI capex story this morning. Microsoft is down 3.4% and acting as the session's biggest single drag on the Nasdaq. The read-through: investors are starting to question the pace and economics of the AI buildout that has powered this market for two years.

Tech-led risk-off, not a broad flush.

The selling is concentrated. The Nasdaq-tracking QQQ is off 5.5% versus a milder 2.9% decline in small-cap IWM and 3.2% in the S&P-tracking SPY, a clear sign this is a mega-cap unwind rather than a market-wide panic. Amazon (AMZN) is down 4.3% and Alphabet (GOOGL) off 3.0%, even as commentary circulates arguing Amazon and Google could outperform Nvidia as the AI trade "enters a new phase," a sign investors are re-rating winners within the group rather than abandoning the theme outright. Safe havens are catching the bid: Treasuries (TLT) are up, gold (GLD) is higher, and oil (USO) is up 1.5%.

Macro backdrop is steady, not the story.

Initial jobless claims came in at 189,000, Challenger job cuts totaled 43,994, and preliminary productivity rose 3.6% with unit labor costs down 0.7%. None of that is alarming, and it is not what is moving the tape today. The selling is a tech and AI-capex story, not a growth scare.

Earnings: sharp winners and losers.

Acadia Healthcare (ACHC) is the day's standout, up 12.1% after raising full-year guidance, with analysts quickly lifting price targets behind it. On the other side, Grand Canyon Education (LOPE) is down 10.3% following its Q3 print as Truist trimmed its target. Steven Madden, Vericel and Warby Parker all raised full-year guidance in a packed morning earnings slate that also included Shift4 Payments, Kontoor Brands, IMAX and Payoneer. Edgewise Therapeutics (EWTX) is essentially flat despite a favorable FDA end-of-Phase 2 readout on EDG-7500, a sign the broader tape is overwhelming individual good news. AstraZeneca's proposed $10 billion bid for Rhythm Pharmaceuticals is adding an M&A undercurrent to the biotech space.

Still ahead this afternoon.

The real test comes after the close, with Airbnb, Cloudflare, Axon, Affirm, Atlassian, DraftKings and Live Nation among dozens of names reporting tonight. With mega-cap tech already on its back foot, these prints will decide whether the afternoon's defensive posture carries into tomorrow's open or whether buyers step back in.

Bottom line: this is a mega-cap AI capex scare, not a broad macro scare, and the afternoon's heavy earnings docket will determine whether the damage stays contained to a handful of names or spreads further.
